Code of Ethics
Guiding Principles and Ethical Standards for Media Practitioners
Charter of Journalistic Ethics & Conduct
As members of the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum, we hold high the principles of truth, accuracy, fairness, independence, and social accountability in all media representations.
1 Truth, Accuracy, and Fact-Verification
Journalists must diligently verify facts before publishing. Rumors, unconfirmed reports, and manipulated media must not be presented as factual information. Whenever error occurs, correction should be published promptly and prominently.
2 Fairness, Balance, and Non-Discrimination
All communities, cultures, and beliefs must be treated with impartiality and dignity. Media coverage should never incite racial, ethnic, or religious hatred, stereotyping, or disharmony among communities in Sri Lanka.
3 Editorial Independence & Professional Integrity
Journalists must resist political, financial, or commercial pressure that threatens their editorial independence. Free gifts, bribes, or favors that might compromise objective reporting are strictly prohibited.
4 Respect for Privacy and Protection of Vulnerable Groups
Personal privacy must be respected, particularly regarding children, victims of crime, trauma, or conflict. Identity of juvenile witnesses or sexual violence victims must never be revealed without legal justification.
5 Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace
Journalists should prioritize conflict-sensitive reporting and constructive public dialogue. Media practitioners are called to actively debunk disinformation that threatens public harmony.
